Historical ignorance is both a cause and a consequence of economic inequality. It shapes how people understand the present: what they blame for inequality, what policies they support, and who they see as deserving of public investment. Let's use last week's discussion on public vs. private education to find out how that works domestically and even internationally.

In light of the long, highly individualistic New York Times Magazine essay by Nikole Hannah-Jones expressing regret over putting her child in public elementary and middle schools, the real history behind what we call "school choice" today was not explained. If it had been, the essay wouldn't have focused on the impact of just her daughter or the silly idea of changing the education system from the inside, one child at a time.

If we want to build a more equal and just society in this country, we must confront the ways this society is not. We got here by building on the lie that capitalism is good for all, so exposing the truth at the foundation of this crumbling empire is necessary to understand what we should avoid repeating in the future.

This government is constantly indoctrinating us to never forget 9/11, ostensibly to honor the 2,977 deaths, over 25,000 injuries, and countless and ongoing long-term health complications suffered by survivors and first responders, who incidentally had to fight this government to receive compensation to deal with those health complications. But what most don’t know is that a lot more is connected to this date than just what happened in this country in 2001. And it is all incredibly important to why that happened in the first place.
